Marquetry involves constructing complex patterns or images out of carefully cut and pieced together wood and veneer – you will be introduced and guided through this extraordinary process before creating a unique notebook of your own design.
Marquetry is thought to have its origins in Europe during the renaissance (although examples of decorative veneered surfaces have also been unearthed from Ancient Egypt). Historically, it has been viewed as a grand and complex process – with opulent, handcut veneered surfaces being developed for bespoke furniture in the courts of Europe, including The Palace of Versailles. More recent designs, have often taken a simpler and more pattern-based approach to the process. In the present day, where mass-produced furniture is the standard, handcut marquetry is hard to find (particularly with many surfaces now being created using laser-cut components) – however the possibilities of making imagery through this method is perhaps more fascinating and valuable then ever.
This workshop is a unique chance to learn this process under expert tuition. You will begin the 2-day masterclass looking at examples of marquetry. You are welcome to bring ideas for your own designs in the form of photographs and drawings, alternatively various existing motifs will be available to work from. Quentin will help you refine your ideas into something which is achievable to cut, glue and construct within the course's 2-day duration. By the end of the session you will have a bound book to take home with you – a truly unique object for your home or a touching gift for a friend or family member.
