Behind The Scenes Talks: An Insider's Guide To The Hepworth Wakefield
Every Tuesday from 31 Jan - 28 Feb, 1 – 2.30pm, £75 (Members £56.25)
Ever wondered what goes on behind-the-scenes at The Hepworth Wakefield? Join us for a series of talks and tours by members of our gallery team.
These talks offer a fascinating insight into the specific philosophy of The Hepworth Wakefield as well as the everyday workings of a modern art gallery. Each talk is a unique chance to meet and ask questions to key members of the curatorial team. You will get to see and hear what goes into creating, constructing and maintaining art exhibitions and our art collection.
Tuesday 31 January, 1 - 2.30pm
Director of The Hepworth Wakefield, Simon Wallis, will introduce the series by discussing how the gallery came into being and the construction of the David Chipperfield designed building. The talk will touch upon the transition from Wakefield Art Gallery to The Hepworth Wakefield and reveal future plans for the gallery.
Tuesday 7 February, 1 - 2.30pm
Chief Curator Andrew Bonacina will discuss how the curating team have worked with the artists shortlisted for The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture to develop new presentations of their work.
Tuesday 14 February, 1 - 2.30pm
The Hepworth Wakefield’s Gallery Manager Matt Kelly will show you how art is brought into the building and handled once inside. You will view the workshops and stores before looking in detail at The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture, learning how specific works were installed and how the team work with the architecture of the building.
Tuesday 21 February, 1 - 2.30pm
University of Huddersfield PhD researcher Clare Nadal will provide an overview of her research into the personal book collection of Barbara Hepworth, which is stored in The Hepworth Wakefield’s archive space. Clare will discuss the nature of her research and provide insight into the interests and enthusiasms of Barbara Hepworth and how this impacted on her sculpture.
Tuesday 28 February, 1 - 2.30pm
Curator Eleanor Clayton will provide an introduction to the collections stored at The Hepworth Wakefield, discussing how The Wakefield Collection and The Hepworth Gifts has developed. You be introduced to some of the curator’s favourite objects and eccentricities found within these extensive and important collections of contemporary art.
Due to the behind the scenes nature of each talk, only a small group of people are able to attend – making this an intimate and exclusive experience. All talks include free refreshments.
