Wakefield is a vibrant town with a growing art scene, from active studio groups such as The Art House to exhibitions at Beam. It’s easy to spend a day out at the renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Bretton, the National Trust's Nostell Priory or the National Coal Mining Museum in Overton. Wakefield Theatre Royal and Wakefield Museum have a changing programme of events in the heart of Wakefield, and there is a whole host of independent and mainstream music venues, restaurants, bars and clubs as well as festivals and events district-wide.
Leeds is just 12 miles away, easily accessible from Wakefield via both the mainline station and the M1 motorway, with its own repertory theatre, opera house and ballet companies, Leeds has a vibrant arts scene. Leeds Art Gallery has one of the UK’s best collections of contemporary British art, and The Henry Moore Institute is an award-winning exhibitions venue, research centre and sculpture archive. Other highlights include the Victoria Quarter, Harewood House, home of the Queen’s cousin, and the Royal Armouries, the national collection of arms and armour.
