David Hockney (1937 - 2026)

12 Jun 2026

The news of David Hockney’s death fills us with sadness and we join the art world in mourning one of the most influential British artists of the past century.

Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Hockney made regular visits as a student at Bradford College of Art to the contemporary art exhibitions held at the former Wakefield Art Gallery. Almost 60 years later, our 2019 exhibition celebrated Hockney’s early works alongside those of painter Alan Davie. West Yorkshire was not simply Hockney’s birthplace it remained a lifelong inspiration and he brought the landscapes of Yorkshire to audiences around the world.

Our thoughts are with Hockney’s family and friends.
